Mac Studio (M5 Max / M5 Ultra)
For running local AI as part of how you make money, not just how you learn - unified memory up to 512GB, quiet, low power draw, no PC to maintain.
This page is for a different person than the rest of this site
Everything else here is built around learning - the mini PC is cheap on purpose, because the goal is getting someone their first working local AI setup without a big financial commitment. This page is not that. This is for people who are running local AI as part of how they actually make money - a freelancer offering AI-powered services, a small studio running client work through a local model, anyone for whom "the model's down" is a business problem, not a weekend annoyance.
If that's not you yet, it's genuinely fine to keep using a mini PC or a GPU build. Come back to this page when uptime and reliability start being worth real money to you.
Why a Mac Studio specifically, for this use case
- Unified memory, not separate VRAM - a Mac Studio's memory is shared between CPU and GPU, scaling up to 512GB. That's headroom for very large models, or for running several different models without re-architecting anything, in a way no single consumer GPU can match
- Quiet, low power draw, always-on friendly - a machine sitting in an office running client work all day benefits from not sounding like a server rack and not showing up as a line item on the power bill the way a multi-GPU PC does
- Nothing to build or maintain - your time running a business is worth more than time spent troubleshooting drivers and airflow. That trade is worth paying for once you're past the hobby stage
What to actually configure
- M5 Max, 64GB minimum - the realistic floor for comfortably running 30B-class models with room for a real context window, not just barely fitting
- M5 Ultra, 96GB or more - if you're serving multiple concurrent requests, running larger models, or want genuine headroom rather than a tight fit
- 256GB or 512GB - only if you have a specific reason to run the largest openly-available models - this tier moves the price well past $10,000, and most professional local AI use cases don't actually need it. Also worth planning around: the 512GB configuration doesn't ship until late October, about two months after the standard configurations - if you need something running sooner, that's one more reason to look at 96GB-256GB instead
Want the PC-building route to similar capability instead, at a lower price and with more hands-on control? The prebuilt RTX 4090 workstation pick and full PC build guide cover that path.
