Why "Free" Cloud AI Isn't Really Free

Free cloud AI tools aren't running at a loss out of generosity. Somewhere in the terms of service, there's usually a line about how your conversations may be used - and it's worth actually knowing what that line says before you paste in something sensitive.

"Free" usually means "you're the input"

Many free-tier AI products reserve the right to use your conversations to improve their models, unless you specifically opt out - and opting out is sometimes a paid-tier feature, not a free one. That's a reasonable business model. It's just not the same thing as privacy, and the two get blurred in a lot of marketing.

This isn't a reason to panic - it's a reason to read one paragraph

Most people paste things into a chat window without thinking twice, the same way most people don't read a EULA. The fix here isn't fear, it's just knowing what you're actually agreeing to for the specific tool you're using, and deciding case by case what you're comfortable sending off your own machine.

Where local AI actually changes the calculation

A model running on your own hardware has no terms of service to check, because there's no third party in the loop at all. That's not a knock on cloud AI tools - plenty of them are upfront about their data practices, and cloud models are still genuinely more capable at some tasks. It's just a different tradeoff: convenience and raw capability on one side, nothing leaving your machine on the other.
